On October 7, 1571, more than 400 ships clashed in the Mediterranean Sea near Lepanto. The "Holy League" defeated an Ottoman fleet that posed a significant threat to Christendom. In thanksgiving, this memorial was established.

When St. Jerome stated these words, he was actually speaking about the Old Testament! The ancient scholar moved to Jerusalem in 382 AD to translate the Hebrew Bible into Latin directly, instead of relying upon Greek versions. May we be similarly inspired to seek Christ in the Scriptures!
